Diabetes Mellitus is a non-communicable disease with increasing prevalence, posing a significant challenge to public health development. North Sumatra Province is characterized by socioeconomic and geographic diversity that can potentially influence the profile of DM cases. Up-to-date information on the profile of DM cases based on national survey data is needed as a basis for implementing DM prevention and control programs at the provincial level. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI). The study subjects were residents aged ≥18 years identified as having been diagnosed with DM in North Sumatra Province. Data analysis was conducted descriptively, considering survey weighting to describe sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, hypertension status, and Body Mass Index (BMI) status. The majority of DM sufferers in North Sumatra were in the adult age group (55.7%) and the elderly (44.1%), female (54.7%), and lived in urban areas (72.1%). The proportion of obesity was found to be quite high in DM patients (50.2%). In this case, less supportive health behaviors were still found, such as physical inactivity (48.9%). The characteristics of diabetes patients in North Sumatra indicate that demographic, behavioral, and nutritional risk factors require attention. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for strengthening diabetes promotive and preventive programs in the province and districts/cities.
